Distractions. Today, we’re gonna talk about healthy distractions AND unhealthy distractions. I believe in balance, so I’m gonna give you both. According to our good ole Merriam-Webster dictionary, a distraction is “an object that directs one’s attention away from something else”
One thing we’re gonna have to do if we are really gonna crush the rest of this year is pay attention to 100% of our distractions. You know how it is… You get on Facebook to check your notifications. You scroll a little bit. Something catches your eye. You click on it. Then you go back and finish checking your notifications (which you now have more of, by the way), and then you refresh your feed (or it refreshes on its own) and scroll some more. Before you know it, thirty minutes have gone by… and then an hour… and then a whole day. Unhealthy distractions.
It is so important to be mindful of what distracts you. It’s the only way to effectively win at this thing called life. If you are not aware of what is distracting you and keeping you from reaching your goals, you will continue to waste tons of your time and not even realize it until the time is already gone. The first thing I encourage you to do is make a list of the things that distract you so that you can be mindful of when you find yourself indulging in them. Once you write them down, label them as healthy or unhealthy. We haven’t covered healthy distractions yet, so let’s go.
I have a little cousin named King. I call him “BoomBoom”, and I have called him that since he was a few days old. BoomBoom is a healthy distraction.
There are times that things happen in my life that I just can’t control or change. There’s literally nothing I can do about some of the things I’m currently dealing with… and if I’m not careful, I will find myself laying around and moping about these things. Enter BoomBoom. When I feel like this, I get in my car and I drive to see BoomBoom. Why? Because he takes my attention away from the things I can’t control or change, and he reminds me to have fun. He reminds me to laugh. He reminds me to just enjoy life and know that I AM always taken care of, even if I don’t see what is going on behind the scenes. Even though he is a whole entire toddler, I consider BoomBoom to be my very best friend – and if you follow me on social media, you will quickly see and understand why.
We NEED healthy distractions. They are a necessary part of life. Believe it or not, unhealthy distractions play a role too – they show us how to more effectively manage our time. Today, I really want you to pay attention to what distracts you the most. It could be a relationship, a social network, a website, a situation in your life – whatever it is, make a note of it. AND THEN, I want you to come up with a plan for how you are going to deal with that distraction when it creeps up on you. If it’s social media, there are plugins that will block certain social media sites for a certain amount of time so that you can get work done. Remember that there’s always a way out. Let me give you one of my favorite scriptures: I Corinthians 10:13. I’m gonna read this in the New Living Translation: “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
We are all tempted to give in to our distractions. All of us. However, we are all given a way out. All of us. Remember that! If you need help handling your distractions, just hit me up! I’m here to help.
Have an amazing day today. Show love to yourself AND others. Be GREAT! I speak life to you and everyone and everything connected to you! Catch me tomorrow!
XOXO,
